APC strengthens hold in North-Central as Plateau governor joins ruling party

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has consolidated its dominance in Nigeria’s North-Central region following the formal defection of Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Governor Mutfwang received his APC membership card on Friday at a stakeholders’ meeting in Jos, the state capital, cementing a move that had been publicly announced by the party’s national chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, on December 18, 2025. With the governor’s defection, all states in the North-Central geopolitical zone are now governed by the ruling party.
Mutfwang, elected on the PDP platform in 2023, formally resigned from the party on December 29, 2025, in a letter addressed to the ward chairman of Ampang West Ward in Mangu Local Government Area. At the ceremony, he explained that his decision was driven by the need for purposeful leadership, clarity of direction, and closer alignment with federal government policies and programmes to accelerate development and improve service delivery.
The governor expressed gratitude to the PDP for the opportunity and support he received over the years but said prevailing political realities necessitated the move. Analysts say Mutfwang’s defection adds to a growing trend of PDP governors joining the APC, further consolidating the ruling party’s control in key regions ahead of future elections.
