Niger APC Leader Applauds U.S. Airstrikes on Terrorists, Urges National Support

Former Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism and a prominent APC chieftain in Niger State, Hon. Jonathan Vatsa, has welcomed the ongoing U.S. airstrikes targeting ISIS-affiliated groups and other terrorist organisations in Nigeria, describing the intervention as a “major relief” for the nation.
In a statement issued in Minna on Friday, Vatsa called on all Nigerians who value peace and national development to support the American operations, highlighting that terrorists strike indiscriminately, affecting both Muslims and Christians alike.
“Anyone who opposes this intervention is indirectly siding with the perpetrators of violence against innocent Nigerians,” Vatsa warned.
He specifically criticised Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi for opposing the U.S. airstrikes, describing his position as “retrogressive” and inconsistent with national interest. Vatsa advised Gumi to “keep his peace,” cautioning that reckless statements could undermine efforts to defeat terrorism.
Highlighting the benefits of the airstrikes, Vatsa said they offer hope for a return to normalcy. “This is a great relief for Nigerians. Farmers can return to their farms, children can go back to school, and people can travel without the constant fear of abduction,” he said.
At the same time, Vatsa urged the Nigerian military and other security agencies to remain vigilant, noting that terrorists may attempt to relocate to other regions in response to the strikes. “This is the time to intensify intelligence gathering and work closely with local communities to track the movement of these groups as they flee from the far north,” he advised.
Vatsa also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for seeking international support in tackling Nigeria’s security challenges, emphasising that no country can combat terrorism alone. “Our nation needs external assistance to liberate communities under siege. This partnership is crucial to restoring peace,” he said.
He concluded by calling on Nigerians to back the ongoing operations and remain united in the fight against terrorism, describing the collaboration with international partners as a vital step toward lasting security and stability across the country.
