The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday took decisive action against the spread of false information, directing the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, to investigate social media rumours claiming that Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, had died.
The resolution followed a motion by Senator Titus Zam (Kaduna North), who raised alarm over the rapid spread of misinformation targeting prominent national figures. Zam noted that Akpabio had been erroneously reported dead in a London hospital, even as he presided over Senate plenary. Similarly, rumours about Gowon circulated widely despite his attendance at a Christmas carol service in Abuja.
Senate President Akpabio acknowledged that such false reports have become increasingly common, citing previous cases in which prominent Nigerians, including a well-known businessman, were prematurely declared dead online. He emphasized the need for prompt action to curb the menace of fake news.
“The point of order is sustained. This matter must be referred to the NSA for investigation to identify and hold accountable those behind these falsehoods,” Akpabio said, supporting Zam’s motion.
Lawmakers warned that unchecked circulation of false reports could erode public confidence in institutions and disrupt national stability. Experts note that misinformation spreads rapidly on social media, often amplified by politically motivated actors or opportunists seeking attention or influence.
By referring the matter to the NSA, the Senate aims to leverage intelligence and investigative resources to trace the origins of the false claims and ensure accountability. The resolution was unanimously approved through a voice vote, underscoring lawmakers’ collective concern over the potential impact of fake news on governance and public trust.
The Senate also highlighted the importance of public awareness campaigns to educate citizens on verifying information before sharing it online.
By taking this action, the Senate has sent a clear message: deliberate dissemination of false information about public figures will not be tolerated, and those responsible will face thorough investigation. The move reflects a growing recognition of the threat fake news poses to national security, institutional integrity, and democratic governance.
