The Governing Council of the Federal University Dutse (FUD) has approved the appointment of Professor Ahmed Muhammed Gumel as the 4th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University, effective 10 February 2026.
The decision was taken at the Council’s Extraordinary Meeting held on 13 December 2025.[
Director of Public Affairs Abdullahi Yahaya Bello, in a statement quoted the Chairman of the Governing Council, Professor Shuaibu Oba Abdulraheem, to have indicated that the process was thorough, transparent and competitive, with 21 candidates shortlisted and interviewed before Professor Gumel emerged as the successful candidate.
He congratulated the Vice-Chancellor-designate and prayed for divine wisdom and guidance as he prepares to lead the institution.
In his acceptance remarks, Professor Gumel expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah and thanked the Joint Selection Committee, the Governing Council, the incumbent Vice-Chancellor and the University community for the confidence reposed in him. He pledged to consolidate on existing achievements, deepen academic excellence, strengthen research and innovation, and promote effective governance at FUD.
Professor Ahmed Muhammed Gumel is an alumnus of the University of Malaya, Malaysia, where he obtained a Master’s degree in Biotechnology and a PhD in Industrial Biotechnology (Biocatalysis and Bioprocess Technology) in 2009 and 2013, respectively. He also served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the same institution in 2014. His PhD thesis was awarded a Distinction.
He holds additional qualifications including a Professional Master’s Degree in Public Policy and Administration (MPPA), an Advanced Diploma in Education, a Diploma in Data Processing and Information Technology, and a Certificate in Advanced Digital Appreciation Training (ADAPTI).
An accomplished scholar, Professor Gumel has over 45 publications, has authored four books, and has supervised students across undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His research impact is reflected in strong citation indices across Scopus, Google Scholar, ResearchGate and Web of Science.
He is an international researcher with two patents registered with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia and has attracted several competitive research grants.
Professor Gumel joined the Federal University Dutse in 2015 and has since served in key leadership positions, including Head of Department, Dean of Students’ Affairs, and currently Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Central Administration).
He is a registered Biotechnologist, a member of several reputable international professional bodies, a research consultant to AlphaSights, London, and an editorial reviewer for numerous peer-reviewed journals. He has received over 34 awards and recognitions for service and excellence.
Professor Gumel has attended conferences and workshops across Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. He is married with children.
