The Federal High Court in Jalingo has ordered the arrest of social media activist Abdulmumuni Imam over allegations of defaming the Minister of State for Regional Development, Barrister Uba Maigari.
Imam, in a trending post on his verified Facebook page, claimed that the Minister diverted ₦16.5 billion intended for the reconstruction of Namnai Bridge in Gassol Local Government Area, which has reportedly stalled work on the project.
Speaking to journalists on Friday, Dr. Ibrahim Effiong Esq, legal counsel to Minister Maigari, described Imam as a “self-acclaimed social media activist” whose posts have “pitched the Minister against the people of Taraba State and seriously damaged his reputation.”
Effiong said the Minister is not seeking monetary compensation but wants Imam to appear in court to defend his claims and set the record straight.
“My client has been inundated with reports alleging the diversion of over ₦16.5 billion meant for the Namnai Bridge reconstruction,” Effiong said. “The Minister, as a law-abiding citizen, deemed it necessary for these claims to be tested in court. Instead of appearing, Imam has continued posting that security agents are looking for him. We approached the court, not security agencies.”
Effiong emphasised the need for responsible use of social media: “Freedom of speech comes with the responsibility to use it wisely. Activism requires both bravery and accountability. If one attacks public officials under the guise of activism, one must be of unquestionable character. Imam’s avoidance of the court undermines this principle.”
He added: “This matter is not about money or compensation. It is about ensuring that the truth is established. If the Minister is found culpable, the law will take its course. Otherwise, the activist must face the consequences of irresponsible public conduct.”
