President Bola Tinubu has forwarded the name of retired Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa, to the Senate for confirmation as Nigeria’s next Minister of Defence
His nomination was transmitted to the Senate on Tuesday in a letter addressed to Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
The President’s communication to the Senate was made public in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
General Musa is set to replace Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who resigned from the cabinet on Monday on health grounds.
Musa would replace Mohammed Badaru, who resigned his position on Monday.
Gen. Musa led the Nigerian Armed Forces from 2023 to October 2025 and is remembered for his counterterrorism command experience.
He received the Colin Powell Award for Soldiering in 2012.
Born in Sokoto in 1967, he completed his early education in the state before moving to Zaria for advanced studies.
He entered the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1986, graduating in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science degree.
The Senate is expected to screen and confirm the nomination in the coming days.
