Human rights activist, Barrister Chukwudi Ezeobika, has condemned the recent nomination of several high-profile individuals as Nigerian ambassadors, describing the appointments as a blow to the country’s international credibility.
In a statement shared on Tuesday via his X handle, Ezeobika specifically cited Prof. Yakubu Mahmood and Reno Omokri. While acknowledging their professional expertise, he argued that their selection serves to perpetuate what he called “this administration’s failures, falsehoods, and misdirection,” rather than advancing Nigeria’s national interests.
“The image Nigeria projects to the world today—as a nation in disrepute—is reflected in the nomination of these figures as ambassadors for a country that once stood for dignity, competence, and sovereignty,” Ezeobika said.
The activist warned that ambassadorial roles are more than ceremonial posts. He said they are critical instruments for projecting Nigeria’s foreign policy, attracting investment, and safeguarding the country’s global image.
“These nominees, despite their qualifications, risk entrenching the administration’s missteps instead of promoting Nigeria’s strategic interests,” he added.
Ezeobika’s comments come amid rising public debate over the Federal Government’s ambassadorial selections. Critics have raised concerns not only about the nominees’ political affiliations but also about their ability to effectively represent Nigeria on the global stage. The controversy highlights broader questions about merit, transparency, and strategic foresight in diplomatic appointments.
“At a time when Nigeria seeks to reclaim credibility internationally, these appointments threaten to undo decades of diplomatic progress,” he said.
Civil society groups and political commentators have long stressed that ambassadorial appointments should prioritize expertise, competence, and national interest over political loyalty. Ezeobika echoed this, framing the nominations as a critical test of the administration’s commitment to professionalism and Nigeria’s international standing.
The Federal Government has yet to respond to the criticisms. Analysts predict that the controversy could intensify scrutiny of future diplomatic appointments, emphasizing the need for merit-based, strategically aligned selections that reinforce Nigeria’s global image rather than weaken it.
