The Illushi/Uroh community in Esan South East Local Government Area, Edo State, has urged authorities to launch a comprehensive review of longstanding land disputes and complaints involving Abuja-based lawyer Victor Giwa.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos, Evangelist Chris Okeh, former President of the Illushi Progressive Association of Nigeria (IPAN), said the community had repeatedly submitted petitions over the years highlighting disputes in the area and concerns tied to Giwa. While some progress had been made by the Inspector-General of Police, many issues remain unresolved.
Okeh noted that recent public statements by Giwa had reignited concerns among affected parties in Abuja, Lagos, and Edo State, prompting the briefing. “We cannot allow narratives that may mislead the public to go unchecked,” he said, emphasizing the community’s commitment to peace, accountability, and due process.
He acknowledged the efforts of the Inspector-General of Police, the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), and the Judiciary, praising their ongoing attention to the complaints. Among the petitions cited were cases from Ms. Asabe Waziri in Abuja, currently before the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Ms. Ibeto Uche in Lagos, and members of the Illushi/Uroh community. The complaints cover land disputes, intimidation, and alleged misuse of legal or security processes.
The community stressed it is not leveling definitive accusations but is calling for transparent investigations. “When similar concerns arise across multiple states, it cannot be ignored. Only a thorough review can provide clarity,” Okeh added.
The statement also appealed to the Inspector-General of Police and the Chief of Army Staff to ensure an impartial examination of all pending petitions, including potential involvement of security personnel.
Prince Ibechile C.G. Mordi, representing the community, affirmed their readiness to support investigators. “We have documents, witnesses, and evidence to substantiate our petitions and will provide them whenever required,” he said.
Despite raising these concerns, the community lauded law enforcement and judicial authorities, acknowledging that their diligence reassures citizens that no one is above scrutiny.
The Illushi/Uroh community concluded by calling for peaceful dialogue and a transparent resolution of all unresolved matters affecting the area.
