Shettima Welcomes Former Kogi Governor Wada, Key Opposition Leaders into APC

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday received former Kogi State Governor, Captain Wada Ichalla Wada, into the All Progressives Congress (APC), in what party insiders describe as one of the most strategic political defections ahead of the 2027 elections.
Joining the former governor were the Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) 2025 deputy governorship candidate, Hon. Sam Abenemi, and several influential opposition figures from across Kogi State.
Shettima, who presided over the ceremony, said the growing wave of defections reflected renewed public confidence in the APC.
“It gladdens my heart to see this day,” he said. “Kogi State is witnessing good governance, and this marks a new chapter not just for the APC here, but for our party nationwide. Today, we welcome respected leaders whose presence strengthens the progressive family.”
The Vice President added that the development sends a clear message ahead of the next presidential election.
“I will convey this to Mr President. The message from Kogi is unmistakable—President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 victory is assured.”
In a brief but colourful ceremony, Shettima presented APC flags to all defectors, led by ex-Governor Wada.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Capt. Wada said joining the APC was a decision driven by conviction.
“There are many reasons we are crossing over,” he said. “The APC is a progressive platform, and President Tinubu has demonstrated genuine commitment to national recovery. His courage in removing fuel subsidy has stabilised the economy—we’ve seen food prices begin to drop, the naira strengthen, and confidence return. The dividends of democracy are visible.”
Wada added that the defectors would work to ensure Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
Earlier, APC state chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Bello, assured Shettima that Kogi State was firmly behind the President, saying Tinubu “does not need to campaign here” because “his victory is already guaranteed.”
