***Decries misplaced national priorities
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has decried the reported non-payment of allowances owed to members of the Super Eagles, calling it “a disgrace to the nation” and a stark reflection of misaligned national priorities.
Speaking on his official social media handle, Obi expressed outrage that Nigeria continues to allocate funds for “needless lavish spending and political patronage,” yet fails to meet its obligations to athletes who consistently deliver pride on the global stage.
“It is truly unfortunate that our Super Eagles, who tirelessly represent our nation, are still owed their allowances,” Obi said. “We find money for extravagance and political patronage, yet fail to pay those who patriotically raise our flag and serve with dedication. That is what is found in a now disgraced country.”
Obi warned that such treatment of national athletes mirrors a broader culture of undervaluing hard work and public service, sending the wrong message to the country’s youth. “When those who serve their country are not treated with dignity, it signals to our youth that effort, loyalty, and excellence are not rewarded,” he stated.
Calling for immediate action, Obi urged the relevant authorities to clear the outstanding payments without delay and implement a transparent, accountable system for managing funds allocated to national teams.
Reaffirming his vision for equity, responsibility, and principled governance, the former Anambra State governor concluded: “We must do better. A new Nigeria is POssible.”
