Kogi State is set for a major boost in grassroots healthcare delivery as Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo prepares to commission 80 newly revitalized Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the state — the first phase of a sweeping modernization drive launched in April 2024.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Ismaila Isah, the governor will perform the flag-off ceremony on Friday at the Old Market PHC in Lokoja, signaling the beginning of a statewide exercise to transform rural health facilities into fully functional, patient-friendly centres equipped to meet the needs of local communities.
Governor Ododo, who personally inspected some of the completed facilities ahead of the commissioning, said the initiative reflects his administration’s determination to make quality healthcare accessible, affordable, and reliable for every Kogi citizen.
“This project goes beyond refurbishing old structures,” the Governor said. “It’s about restoring public trust in our health system by ensuring modern equipment, qualified staff, and constant drug supply in every Primary Healthcare Centre.”
Ododo praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for providing national policy direction and support that have enabled states to invest in stronger, more resilient healthcare systems. He noted that Tinubu’s emphasis on primary healthcare and human capital development has inspired ongoing reforms across Kogi’s health sector.
The governor reaffirmed that his administration’s vision is to make every ward in Kogi a hub of accessible and efficient healthcare services, ensuring that “no community is left behind.”
Launched in April 2024, the PHC revitalization programme targets over 200 facilities across the state. With the first phase now complete, 80 centres are ready for commissioning in Idah, Igalamela, Kabba, Lokoja, Mopamuro, Okene, Ogori-Magongo, Ijumu, Yagba East, Adavi and other local government areas.
The modernization project is part of a broader agenda to reposition Kogi’s health sector, strengthen preventive care, and reduce pressure on tertiary hospitals.
