Peter Obi Slams Neurosurgeon’s Abduction, Decries Rising Insecurity

***Seeks swift rescue of Dr Mbanugo, urges stronger U.S. security ties.

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the abduction of Dr Tochukwu Mbanugo, a consultant neurosurgeon at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, describing the incident as a tragic reflection of Nigeria’s deepening insecurity.
In a statement on his X-Handle titled “When Those Who Save Us Are Not Safe,” Obi said the kidnapping of Dr Mbanugo, shortly after he successfully performed a complex brain surgery, was both heartbreaking and symbolic of the growing threat faced by Nigeria’s most skilled professionals.
“The kidnapping of Dr Tochukwu Mbanugo, a Consultant Neurosurgeon, shortly after an intensive day of saving lives in the operating theatre, including the successful removal of a complex brain tumour, is deeply worrisome,” Obi said. “His abduction is not just an attack on one man; it is an attack on our already fragile healthcare system and on the hope of millions who depend on the selfless service of our few remaining specialists.”
The former Anambra State governor lamented that Nigeria’s security situation has deteriorated to the point where even those dedicated to saving lives now live in fear.
He cited grim statistics, revealing that Nigeria has fewer than 150 neurosurgeons for a population of over 200 million, meaning there is approximately one brain surgeon for every 1.9 million citizens, compared to the World Health Organisation’s recommendation of one neurosurgeon per 100,000 people.
“This enormous gap highlights the sacrifices and pressure our doctors face daily, and the severe consequences of insecurity, which continues to drive many of them away,” he noted.
Obi urged the Federal Government to urgently engage the United States government and other partners through diplomatic and strategic cooperation to combat the worsening wave of kidnapping and terrorism across Nigeria.
“We must ensure the safe and immediate release of Dr Tochukwu, and I urge the security agencies to act swiftly. No nation can develop when its brightest minds live in fear. We must protect all—especially those who dedicate their lives to saving ours,” Obi stated
