Senate President Godswill Akpabio has distanced himself from a viral social media post falsely quoting him as dismissing killings in Nigeria and criticizing former U.S. President Donald Trump, describing it as a “reckless and malicious fabrication.”
The post, which originated from a platform identified as Rant HQ, alleged that Akpabio said Nigerians were “fully satisfied” with the country’s situation and that Trump should “focus on America.”
Reacting on Sunday, Akpabio’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, dismissed the post as “a deliberate act of misinformation designed to stir diplomatic friction and damage the Senate President’s image.”
“The statement is a complete falsehood. Senator Akpabio has never made such comments — not in public, private, or in writing,” Eyiboh said. “Even the photo attached to the viral post was deceptively taken from a different official event to give it false credibility.”
He described the Senate President as “a respected statesman and advocate of international cooperation, who holds President Trump and the American people in high esteem.”
Eyiboh urged Nigerians to ignore the publication and be wary of false narratives spread online, warning that the growing wave of misinformation poses a threat to public trust and diplomacy.
“We urge citizens to verify information before sharing. The Office of the Senate President remains committed to truth, transparency, and responsible engagement at home and abroad,”* he added.
