President Bola Tinubu on Thursday swore in Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), officially ushering in a new era for Nigeria’s electoral body. The ceremony took place at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, ahead of an expanded meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC).
Addressing the new INEC boss, President Tinubu emphasized the need to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process and strengthen the Commission’s institutional capacity to deliver free, fair, and credible elections.
Amupitan’s appointment came after a unanimous endorsement by the National Council of State and Senate confirmation by voice vote, presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
A Professor of Law at the University of Jos and Senior Advocate of Nigeria since 2014, Amupitan hails from Ayetoro Gbede in Ijumu LGA, Kogi State. He is widely recognized for his expertise in company law, evidence, corporate governance, and privatization law.
With his new role, Amupitan immediately faces high-stakes responsibilities, including preparing for the November 2025 Anambra State governorship election and the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections scheduled for February 2026. His tenure is expected to focus on transparency, efficiency, and strengthening public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.
