Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has launched a major rural electrification drive aimed at transforming lives and boosting economic activities across 30 communities in the state.
The governor on Monday flagged off the distribution and installation of 30 units of 500kVA transformers as part of the first phase of a statewide electrification project designed to strengthen power supply and drive grassroots development in all three senatorial districts.
Speaking at the official flag-off ceremony held at the Government House in Lokoja, Governor Ododo described the project as a milestone in fulfilling his administration’s promise to “light up Kogi” and improve the quality of life for residents.

“It is with great pride and a profound sense of duty that I flag off the first phase of this project — 30 units of 500kVA transformers, strategically distributed across the three senatorial districts of our beloved state,” the governor said.
He explained that the initiative stemmed from direct community requests received through the Ministry of Rural and Energy Development, adding that his administration treats every such request with urgency in line with its people-first governance philosophy.
Governor Ododo stressed that fairness and balanced development were key principles guiding the distribution of the transformers.
“In the spirit of fairness and equity, these transformers will be distributed across the three senatorial districts so that every part of our state feels the impact simultaneously,” he said.
The governor noted that the project was about more than power supply — it was about opportunity and empowerment.
“Electricity drives commerce, education, agriculture, and healthcare. This project is about lighting lives, powering dreams, and strengthening the security and prosperity of our communities,” he added.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering projects with direct impact on the people and promised that subsequent phases of the electrification programme would reach even more communities.
Governor Ododo also urged residents to protect public infrastructure from vandalism, saying the equipment must be preserved for the benefit of all.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Rural and Energy Development, Engr. Abdulmutalib Mohammed, said the project followed rigorous technical assessments to identify the most critical needs of communities. He praised the governor for prioritizing rural areas that had long suffered unreliable electricity supply.
“This initiative will not only light up homes but also stimulate business activities and improve livelihoods,” the Commissioner said.
The first phase of the electrification project marks a major stride in Kogi State’s push for inclusive infrastructure development and improved living standards across its rural communities.
