A seasoned legal expert and National Commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu has assumed the role of Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC} after professor Mahmood Yakubu officially stepped down bringing to a close his second and final five-year term.
Following his departure, ,. She also leads the Commission’s Legal Services, Clearance & Complaints Committee (LSCCC), and will oversee INEC until a permanent chairman is appointed.
Yakubu, who previously served a first term ending in November 2020 before being reappointed and confirmed for a second term, made the announcement during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on Tuesday.
In his farewell address, he praised INEC staff and RECs for their dedication, highlighting the collective effort needed to navigate Nigeria’s complex and high-stakes electoral landscape. “It has been a period of both significant challenges and accomplishments,” he said, reflecting on his decade of leadership.
Agbamuche-Mbu’s appointment ensures continuity at INEC as the country gears up for the 2027 general elections, a period expected to test the Commission’s independence, credibility, and operational readiness.
