Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has been conferred with Honorary Citizenship of the State of Georgia, USA, in recognition of his engagements during the Black Congressional Week in Washington, D.C.
The honour was bestowed on Thursday, September 25, after Obi participated in a series of events that highlighted Georgia’s growing partnerships with Africa.
At the Congressional Black Caucus Week Reception, held in the Senate Kennedy Caucus Room, Obi joined U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock in discussions on strengthening democracy and development across Africa. Senator Warnock, he noted, encouraged deeper dialogue on Africa’s governance future.
Obi also met with Ms. Kim Clark, Chief Executive Officer of Georgia Power, one of the largest electricity providers in the United States with a generation capacity of over 20,000 megawatts. He described the conversation as “deeply insightful,” stressing that energy partnerships remain pivotal to Africa’s sustainable growth.

Later at the One Voice Africa Forum, a platform advocating for the dignity of Black immigrants, Obi called for stronger advocacy and leadership renewal in Africa, saying:
“The continent’s potential is immeasurable if led by visionary and responsible leaders.”

The day’s engagements culminated in the State of Georgia conferring Honorary Citizenship on the former Anambra governor—an honour he described as a reinforcement of his commitment to “learning, serving, and building a new Nigeria that is truly possible.”
