The Federal Government has set an ambitious target of producing 10 billion standard cubic feet (scf) of gas per day by 2030 as part of efforts to unlock Nigeria’s vast energy resources and boost economic growth.
Finance and Economy Minister, Mr. Wale Edun, disclosed this in Abuja yesterday during a strategic meeting with the management of Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG). The talks centred on expanding gas production, improving the investment climate, and accelerating reforms in the energy sector.
Edun said recent agreements, including the Deepwater deal with TotalEnergies, reflect progress towards creating a more competitive and investor-friendly landscape. “The President has stabilised the economy and created new opportunities for manufacturing and energy. As we roll out comprehensive tax reforms, the input of private sector players will be vital,” he added.
He further assured stakeholders that government reforms—such as the deployment of digital trade systems—would streamline oversight, eliminate inefficiencies and strengthen transparency. “We want a technology-driven environment where investors can operate with confidence,” Edun said.
On his part, NLNG Managing Director, Dr. Philip Mshelbila, reported improvements in operations, noting increased gas supply, enhanced security on the Trans-Niger pipeline, and capacity utilisation rising above 70 per cent. He also highlighted progress on the Bodo–Bonny Road project and urged government support for extending the East–West highway under the tax credit scheme.
The meeting, observers say, represents a critical step towards repositioning Nigeria’s energy sector under the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
With stronger collaboration between government and industry players, Nigeria is pushing to cement its place as a global gas powerhouse by the end of the decade.
