Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, yesterday joined staff, students and alumni of the Archbishop Charles Heerey College of Health Sciences and Technology (ACHCOHSTEN), Nkpor, Anambra State, to celebrate the institution’s 20th anniversary.
Speaking at the event, Obi commended the college for its two decades of contribution to health education and nation-building, noting that over 700 graduates of the institution are practising across the world.
He stressed the urgent need to train more health professionals to meet Nigeria’s growing demand, describing education as the most transformative investment for national development.
“I urge matriculating and graduating students to take their studies seriously, seeing themselves as potential global citizens who can contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s healthcare system and to the world,” Obi said.
The former governor recalled his past support to the college, including the donation of a coaster bus, the construction of a female hostel and yearly contributions towards its growth. He also announced a fresh ₦10 million donation to strengthen the institution.
Obi praised the management of ACHCOHSTEN for expanding into multiple health disciplines within 20 years, and for producing graduates who have distinguished themselves globally.
He reiterated that Nigeria’s progress depends on sustained investment in education, healthcare and human capital, insisting that a new Nigeria is possible.
