The emergency caucus meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jigawa, Saturday may have looked like a routine show of solidarity.
In reality, it revealed something deeper: Jigawa is fast emerging as a litmus test for the PDP’s survival instincts and credibility as Nigeria hurtles toward 2027.
With the dust still unsettled from the Babura/Garki by-election, the state chapter turned the spotlight on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), demanding sanctions against three of its officials accused of misconduct.
On paper, it was a local grievance. Politically, however, it signaled the PDP’s attempt to redefine its narrative as the watchdog of electoral integrity.

The symbolism was not lost on observers. Sitting shoulder-to-shoulder in Dutse were former governor Sule Lamido, Senator Mustapha Khabeeb, and 2023 governorship candidate Mustapha Sule Lamido—figures who represent both the old guard and the emerging generation of PDP politics.
Their united front underscored an important message: internal discipline and collective loyalty will determine whether the PDP remains a serious contender or slides into irrelevance.
By pressing INEC publicly, the Jigawa caucus essentially cast itself as the conscience of the opposition.
It is a daring move at a time when many state chapters remain distracted by internal squabbles and alignments ahead of the convention.
Jigawa’s insistence on party cohesion, backed by its demand for electoral accountability, sets a tone that other PDP strongholds may be pressured to follow.

Ultimately, the meeting was less about Babura/Garki than it was about 2027. For a party that has suffered bruising losses, Jigawa’s caucus is positioning itself as a proving ground, testing whether PDP can still rally, demand fairness, and project unity in the face of a formidable APC machine.
If Jigawa holds the line, the PDP may yet find in it the spark it desperately needs to re-energize its national comeback bid.
If it fails, the state could just as easily become a cautionary tale of missed opportunity.
