Marafa dumps APC, cites betrayal, deep division in Zamfara

Former Zamfara Central Senator Kabiru Marafa has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the ruling party of betraying its members and fueling disunity in Zamfara State.

In a video message to his supporters, Marafa declared that he could no longer remain in a party “that has cheated and abandoned its loyal members both in Zamfara and across Nigeria.”

The ex-lawmaker, who was once a strong APC powerbroker in the Northwest, said his decision came after “two days of intensive consultations” with stakeholders.

“APC as a party has betrayed and cheated us in Zamfara and Nigeria. In the state, the betrayal is at its highest peak. Since Bala Buni took over from former governor Matawalle, not a single meeting has been held. The party has been divided into two factions for over two years, and nothing has been done to reconcile them,” Marafa said in Hausa.

Marafa’s exit further underscores the cracks within the APC in Zamfara, where infighting between camps loyal to Mai Mala Buni and Bello Matawalle has left the party fractured since 2022.

With the 2027 elections approaching, political observers say Marafa’s move could reshape alignments in Zamfara, especially as opposition parties are seeking to capitalize on APC’s internal strife in the state.
