Tension is brewing in Nigeria’s oil belt as youth leaders from the Niger Delta have given the Federal Government a seven-day ultimatum over the leadership of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
At a press conference in Abuja, the Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Forum urged President Bola Tinubu to appoint what they described as a “credible Niger Delta professional” to head the national oil company. They also called for a review of what they alleged were irregularities linked to the tenure of Bashir Bayo Ojulari, who recently resigned as Group Chief Executive Officer.
Forum chairman, Sir Jothan Lokpobiri Snr, said the government must ensure fairness in appointments affecting the oil sector.
“If the government fails to act within seven days, we will explore lawful avenues to press our demands. The consequences of inaction could affect the fragile peace and stability in this country,” he stated.

The Forum expressed concerns over what they described as unresolved issues during Ojulari’s tenure, including questions around refinery operations and staff disengagement. They urged anti-corruption agencies to review these matters.
“These are not mere claims,” argued Dr. Legborsi Yamaabana, President-General of the Ogoni Youth Federation. “They represent genuine concerns about the future of the oil industry and the welfare of our people.”
The group further stressed that NNPCL should not be left “without credible leadership,” insisting that leadership of the company should reflect the contributions of the Niger Delta to the nation’s oil wealth.
Observers say the ultimatum underscores the continuing sensitivity of oil politics in the Niger Delta. While the Forum avoided calling for unrest, it cautioned that failure to address the region’s concerns could strain the delicate peace in the area.
“This is not a threat,” Lokpobiri emphasized. “It is a reminder that stability in the Niger Delta depends on justice and inclusiveness.”
With the seven-day deadline now underway, attention shifts to the Presidency, which faces fresh pressure to address the demands while ensuring stability in the energy sector.
