Defectors Lack Democratic Courage, Says PDP’s Hajiya Farida Umar

Former National Ex-Officio candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Hajiya Farida Umar, has taken a swipe at defectors from the opposition party, describing them as politicians without “democratic temerity” to withstand challenges.

Speaking during a visit to the PDP state secretariat in Lafia, the outspoken female activist vowed to remain in the party despite mounting pressures and persuasions to join rival platforms.

“I must say it loud and clear: those who left our party lack democratic courage,” Farida said. “Why would anyone abandon the PDP for new parties? True democrats stay, fight from within, and build stronger structures instead of running away.”

Farida disclosed that she recently turned down invitations to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where she was allegedly listed as part of its steering committee without consent. “They invited me to a meeting in Akwanga, but I told them PDP hasn’t failed badly enough to be deserted. Defection only weakens your base. Each time you leave and return, you lose followership,” she noted.

The Nasarawa politician, who hails from Gayam ward, one of the hotspots during the 2023 governorship race, pledged to mobilize women and grassroots groups ahead of 2027.
She also declared readiness to support any PDP governorship candidate, including Dr. David Ombugadu, if he emerges.

On former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, she said: “With due respect, Atiku has played his part in politics. I have mine to pursue. Jumping from one party to another won’t bring the results I want at this stage.”

Dismissing speculations about her alleged defection, she stressed: “I remain PDP. The ADC coalition is not a threat here; the umbrella is too deeply rooted at the grassroots.”
