Edo: Special Squad Cracks Down on Cultists, Criminal Hideouts in Benin City

The newly established Special Security Squad in Edo State has intensified its crackdown on cultists and criminal gangs, arresting several suspects during coordinated raids across Benin City on Wednesday, July 16.
The operations are part of “Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultists”, a state-wide initiative launched by Governor Monday Okpebholo to restore public safety and dismantle criminal networks that have long plagued parts of the state.
The security team—which includes personnel from the military, police, NSCDC, local hunters, vigilante groups, and even repentant cultists—carried out intelligence-led raids in key flashpoints across the city, targeting suspected hideouts and cult enclaves.
The raids spanned communities such as Obe (Sapele Road), Iyowa, Evbonika, and Azuwa village, all within Benin City. At Azuwa village, located in Ovia North East LGA, security operatives acted on credible intelligence and made several arrests.
At Evbonika village, the squad raided a building suspected to be a cult meeting point. The owner of the building was interrogated, and the premises were thoroughly searched. According to sources, the visible presence of the armed task force sent a strong message to criminal groups operating in the area.
Further arrests were made at a hotel along Power Line, off First Ugbor Road in GRA, where suspects were found with incriminating materials. Authorities have withheld names pending further investigation.
Speaking on the latest developments, Governor Monday Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s zero-tolerance policy on violent crime.
“We will not allow criminals to dictate the pace of life or the future of our state,” the governor said. “This is not mere rhetoric—this operation is backed by firm political will and the full force of law.”
The governor emphasized that the special squad would continue to operate with professionalism, accountability, and community engagement as its guiding principles. He said the operation’s goal is not just arrest, but long-term deterrence and public confidence in security institutions.
Authorities have urged residents to support the security efforts by sharing timely information and avoiding shielding criminal elements in their communities.
As of press time, the identities of those arrested have not been disclosed, but investigations are ongoing. The state government has promised regular updates and full disclosure of outcomes as the operation progresses.
Edo State has in recent years battled with recurring cult violence and kidnapping, especially in peri-urban and riverine communities. With the recent formation of the Special Squad, officials say the tide is expected to turn in favour of law-abiding citizens and investors.
