The Opposition Coalition under the aegis of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has joined Nigerians in mourning the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who died in London on Saturday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82.
In a solemn statement issued on behalf of the opposition bloc, Chief Peter Ameh, a prominent political figure and national voice for democratic accountability, acknowledged the weight of Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria’s history—even amid deep ideological and political differences.
“Every soul shall taste death,” Chief Ameh began, quoting from the Qur’an. He described Buhari as a leader whose legacy spanned two pivotal moments in Nigeria’s political evolution: first, as a Military Head of State between 1983 and 1985, and later as a civilian President from 2015 to 2023.
“Despite our role as the opposition, we cannot deny that his tenure—like every leader’s—forms an indelible chapter in Nigeria’s story. He faced challenges, made hard choices, and served with the conviction of his beliefs,” the statement read.
Beyond condolences, the CUPP’s message turned into a broader call to conscience for those currently in power, urging public office holders to reflect deeply on the weight of leadership and the fleeting nature of time.
“This loss should remind every leader of the legacy they leave behind,” Chief Ameh emphasized. “Power is not eternal; what lives on are the lives touched and the systems improved.”
He challenged the political elite to invest more in basic social services, especially qualitative healthcare, so that ordinary Nigerians no longer suffer in silence while their leaders seek care abroad.
“We urge those in office to use their time to provide basic necessities, especially in health and education,” he added. “Let our time on earth be remembered for how we improved lives—not for how we held on to power.”
The statement concluded with a prayer for the repose of the late President’s soul and condolences to his family, his Katsina community, and the nation at large.
“May the soul of President Muhammadu Buhari rest in peace, and may his legacy remind us that true leadership is service to humanity.”
Chief Peter Ameh’s message adds to the growing wave of national reflection following the death of one of Nigeria’s most consequential and polarizing post-independence leaders.
