Anambra 2025: Obi Backs Moghalu, Rallies Otti, Umeh, Nwonye

Labour Party (LP) national leader and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declared Dr. George Moghalu as the best candidate to govern Anambra State, urging citizens to rally behind him ahead of the November election.
Obi, who led other top party leaders to the official campaign flag-off in Onitsha on Friday, said Moghalu possesses the right temperament, experience, and compassion to lead the state effectively.
“Dr. Moghalu is well-prepared for governance. He understands the needs of the people and will not fail them,” Obi said, addressing a crowd of party supporters. “Governance is about compassion, about caring for the petty trader and the common man—not collecting taxes from the same people you fail to empower.”
Obi reminded the crowd of his plans to contest the 2027 presidential election and urged party supporters to remain committed to the LP, despite the party’s involvement in a broader opposition coalition that recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform for 2027.
“We are part of the coalition and have adopted ADC for the 2027 election. But today, we are Labour Party members and this campaign is for our LP flagbearer, Dr. Moghalu,” he said.
Obi praised the selection of Ifeoma Okaro as Moghalu’s running mate, describing her as “popular, organized, and committed to the wellbeing of families.”
Recounting his achievements as former Anambra governor, Obi said, “They say I only built a brewery. But that brewery is the highest taxpayer today and a major employer. Compare that with the so-called fun city. Which one adds more value?”
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, represented at the event, threw his weight behind Moghalu, calling him a principled politician with roots in Aba.
“Moghalu is a son of Aba, and we will campaign for him in Abia. Obi remains the best-performing governor Anambra has seen. What he did will be replicated—and even surpassed—by Moghalu,” Otti said.
Also present were Senators Victor Umeh (Anambra Central) and Tony Nwonye (Anambra North), both of whom pledged full support for Moghalu’s candidacy. They urged him to maintain an issue-based campaign and avoid mudslinging.
In his address, Dr. George Moghalu vowed to run an inclusive and God-fearing government if elected, assuring the crowd of impactful development across sectors.
“We’ll work with the fear of God. Roads will be built, children will go to school, agriculture will thrive—and no one will pay tax with a pestle. Our manifesto will be implemented fully. We won’t disappoint you,” he said.
Earlier, State Party Chairman Ugochukwu Emeh, represented by Ven. Chris Orajekwe, said the time had come to rescue Anambra from the grip of misgovernance.
He blamed rising insecurity on the current administration’s alleged negligence and criticized the controversial SASA outfit, accusing it of intimidating citizens under the guise of tax collection.
“Anambra does not belong to any individual. The Labour Party has built a formidable structure and is ready to liberate the state,” Orajekwe said.Immediate compliance with the Supreme Court judgment by all state governments.
