Senate Mourns Passing of Senator Diket Plang’s Wife, Professor Janet Plang

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday fell into solemn silence as lawmakers paid tribute to Professor Janet Plang, the late wife of Senator Diket Plang, who passed away on July 6, 2025, after a prolonged illness.

Rising under Senate Order 42, Senator Simon Bako Lalong, a former governor of Plateau State, formally announced her death during plenary, describing the loss as not just a personal tragedy for Senator Plang, but a moment of collective grief for the entire Senate and Plateau State.

“With the indulgence of the Senate, I rise with a heavy heart to announce the passing of Professor Janet Pui Plang, a professor of repute and wife of our dear colleague,” Lalong said. “She stood by him through every step of his political journey — from councillor to state legislator, commissioner, and now senator.”

Professor Janet Plang, who lectured at the University of Jos, was widely respected for her contributions to academia and public service. Her remains are currently at the mortuary of the Jos University Teaching Hospital, awaiting burial arrangements.

Lalong noted that the people of Plateau State are mourning her death deeply, adding that her quiet strength and enduring support played a crucial role in Senator Plang’s public service career.

Following the announcement, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau called for a minute of silence in her honour.
All lawmakers rose in solemn tribute, offering prayers for the repose of her soul.

“May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace,” Barau said.

The Senate is expected to send a high-powered delegation to condole with Senator Plang and attend the funeral when arrangements are finalized.
