Ex-SGF Babachir Lawal Dumps APC, Says New Political Direction Coming Soon

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, has officially resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), ending a years-long association with Nigeria’s ruling party.
Lawal, who served as SGF under President Muhammadu Buhari’s first term, announced his departure in a letter addressed to the APC chairman of Bangshika Ward, in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The letter, personally signed by Lawal, stated that his resignation was with immediate effect, although he stopped short of declaring his next political destination.
“I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the All Progressives Congress, APC,” he wrote.
“In due course, I will make public my current political affiliation, where I plan to join compatriots to work towards making Nigeria a better living place for all citizens.”
“Please remain blessed and extend my warm regards to members of your party.”
Lawal’s exit from the APC is expected to generate political ripples, especially as the country gears up for the 2027 general elections. A longtime ally of President Buhari, Lawal has in recent years become one of the party’s more vocal critics—particularly over issues of internal democracy, governance style, and the direction of national affairs.
Observers are now watching closely to see where the former SGF lands next in the unfolding realignment of political forces ahead of 2027.
