Democracy Day: SDP Chair Gabam Tells Leaders—Fix Security, Create Jobs, Deliver Justice

As Nigeria marks Democracy Day 2025, the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, has urged political leaders to go beyond rhetoric and deliver real change—particularly in the areas of security, employment, and justice.

In a message released on Wednesday, Gabam described June 12 as a historic day that should inspire action, not just celebration.
He called for a renewed commitment to the ideals championed by late Chief MKO Abiola and other democratic icons, stressing that the spirit of June 12 must reflect in the quality of governance and everyday lives of Nigerians.

“June 12 is not merely a date to commemorate; it is a powerful reminder of our democratic journey and the sacrifices that paved the way,” Gabam said. “The legacy of Chief MKO Abiola should push us to build a Nigeria grounded in justice, equity, and equal opportunity.”

Gabam emphasized that true democracy must address the urgent needs of the people. He warned that the growing frustration among Nigerians—especially the youth and poor—cannot be ignored.

“Our democracy must be people-centered. It must protect the weak, empower the jobless, and ensure no Nigerian is left behind,” he said. “We cannot allow religion, ethnicity, or region to dictate our political choices. Credibility and competence must lead the way.”

The SDP leader also called on elected officials to justify the trust placed in them, saying now is the time for purposeful leadership, not excuses.

“Nigerians are looking for results. Our leaders must show they are capable of reducing poverty, tackling insecurity, and creating real opportunities for our citizens,” he said.

While congratulating Nigerians on the Democracy Day celebration, Gabam urged citizens to remain committed to democratic values and to hold their leaders accountable at every level.

“Our democracy will only grow stronger when the people stay vigilant and insist on good governance,” he said.

He also reaffirmed the SDP’s commitment to providing credible alternatives and building a stronger democratic future for Nigeria.

“Let us work together to build a nation that truly reflects the dreams of our founding democratic heroes,” Gabam concluded. “Democracy must work for the people—not just a few. Happy Democracy Day.”
