EU, Abia Govt Launch N4.8bn Solar Lifeline for Primary Healthcare

Determined to transform healthcare delivery and economic resilience in rural communities, the Abia State Government, in collaboration with the European Union (EU), has launched a game-changing N4.84 billion solar power project under the Nigeria Solar for Health Project (NISHP).

The initiative, unveiled at the Government House in Umuahia on Tuesday, is set to deliver uninterrupted 24/7 solar electricity to over 25 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across 17 local government areas.
This will provid a critical lifeline for medical services, vaccine storage, and emergency care in underserved areas.

Governor Alex Otti, represented by Deputy Governor Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, described the project as a “catalyst for community revival,” promising not only better healthcare but also a surge in local business activities.

“This project is more than just lights and panels—it’s about saving lives, empowering our people, and building a future where no one is left behind,” Emetu said.
“We thank the EU for this honour and pledge our full commitment to making this partnership a lasting success.”

With Abia State contributing 30% counterpart funding, the government is staking its resources and reputation on delivering healthcare that works—even when the national grid doesn’t.

NISHP’s Senior Stakeholder Engagement Manager, Mr. Tinyan Ogiehor, emphasized that the project is tailored to tackle long-standing healthcare gaps, especially in rural areas where power outages have crippled service delivery.

“This solar intervention ensures diagnostic tools can run uninterrupted, vaccines stay viable, and medicines remain effective,” Ogiehor noted. “It’s a direct investment in human lives.”

Beyond healthcare, the solar-powered PHCs are expected to ignite local economic growth, with over 50 small businesses positioned to benefit from the stable energy supply.

To ensure transparency and efficiency, a ten-member Steering Committee, led by the Commissioner for Power, will supervise implementation and oversee timelines.

The EU-backed project reflects a deepening commitment to sustainable development, combining renewable energy with human capital investment in ways that could become a national model.

A brighter, healthier Abia is rising—one powered health centre at a time.
