***“Benue Will No Longer Tolerate a Culture of Violence,” Monarch Declares
The Tor Tiv, Orchivirigh Professor James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse, has delivered a strong message to the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), urging the group to take decisive action against violent elements posing as herders.
In a meeting with MACBAN representatives, the paramount ruler acknowledged the presence of genuine, law-abiding herders in Benue communities but decried the infiltration of criminal elements whose activities have led to killings, destruction of farmlands, and displacement of innocent residents.
“We are not at war with herders,” the Tor Tiv stated. “We are at war with criminal herders—those who kill, maim, and destroy under the cover of a noble tradition.”
He drew a sharp contrast between the peaceful nomadic practices of the past and the current wave of armed violence. “The herders we knew guided their cattle with sticks—not AK-47s. They respected farmland boundaries. That culture was one of peace, not provocation.”
Using a striking analogy, he said, “It’s like a group of mechanics doing their work, but madmen have joined them, dressed the same. If you tell us some among you are criminals, then take action—drive out the madmen.”
The Tor Tiv pushed back against attempts to justify the crisis through cultural relativism, referencing a previous gathering of traditional leaders where it was suggested that change takes time. “Yes, culture evolves, but no culture that condones killing and rape has a future,” he declared. “That must end now.”
He affirmed Benue’s readiness to accommodate any herder who comes in peace and abides by the law, but warned that the state would not allow foreign or violent practices to take root.
“If you come to graze peacefully, we’ll show you where the grass is green,” he said. “But if you come to kill and destroy, your culture is alien to us and has no place in Benue.”
The monarch concluded with a challenge to MACBAN: “You say they are not yours—but they speak like you, dress like you, and kill like you. If you are serious about peace, then take responsibility and clean your house.”
The Tor Tiv’s address underscores the growing urgency in Benue’s call for peace, justice, and the restoration of trust in the face of persistent security threats tied to armed herders.
