Be Honourable: Varsity Don Urges JAMB Registrar to Resign, Not Weep

A university lecturer, Dr. Christian Okeke of the Department of Political Science, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has called on the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, to honourably tender his resignation instead of weeping publicly over technical failures that marred the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Reacting to the Registrar’s admission of responsibility and public display of emotion, Dr. Okeke argued that remorse alone is insufficient. “Leadership is about accountability, and honour demands action, not tears.
Resignation is the only honourable path forward,” he stated.

He described as unacceptable JAMB’s plan to reschedule exams in 65 centres in Lagos and 92 in the South-East, noting that it adds emotional and psychological stress on already traumatised candidates. He also criticised the Board’s initial defence of the poor results, saying it only reversed course after sustained public pressure and legal threats.

“The Board’s negligence turned what should have been a rite of passage for teenagers into a national ordeal.
The least Nigerians expect is the release of the true results, provision of psychological support for affected candidates, and the exit of those responsible, starting with the Registrar,” Dr. Okeke concluded.
