The new Executive Chairman of the Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB), Dr. Kassim Muh’d Kassim, has issued a strong directive to parents across the state: enroll your children in school or risk facing legal penalties.
Dr. Kassim delivered the warning on Wednesday at the NSUBEB headquarters in Lafia, shortly after his inauguration by Governor Abdullahi Sule at Government House. Addressing senior staff, APC stakeholders, traditional leaders, and well-wishers, he emphasized that basic education is a legal right and a moral responsibility.
“Sending children to school is no longer optional. It is compulsory. Any parent who fails to do so is in violation of the law and will be fined accordingly,” he declared.
The NSUBEB chairman stated that under his leadership, the board will work to create an enabling environment for teaching and learning, ensuring that no child is left out of the educational system. He also pledged to integrate almajiri children into formal education, saying the board will implement inclusive policies to reach every child, regardless of background.
Dr. Kassim, a former lawmaker, stressed that literacy is key to a better future for the state’s citizens and vowed to focus more on education reforms that will impact lives, rather than just contracts.
“We are shifting attention from mere contract awards to core issues that affect learning and the welfare of our teachers and pupils,” he said.
Governor Sule, in his remarks during the swearing-in ceremony, charged the new chairman to review the staffing of primary schools and strengthen the basic education system by recruiting more qualified teachers.
“Since 2019, we have prioritized basic education as the foundation of a just and progressive society,” the governor noted.
Also inaugurated during the event were the Chairman and members of the State Local Government Service Commission.
