Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resolve a long-standing financial matter involving the late Chief MKO Abiola by paying the ₦45 billion reportedly owed to him by the Nigerian government.

Lamido made the passionate plea during the public presentation of his autobiography, Being True To Myself, held on Tuesday in Abuja.

Highlighting the lingering injustice over the annulled 1993 presidential election, Lamido said, “I appeal to President Tinubu to bring final closure to the June 12 saga. General Ibrahim Babangida, in his memoir, admitted that Abiola won the election. When I met him, he also confirmed that the federal government owes Abiola ₦45 billion.”

He continued, “Abiola suffered double punishment—he was denied his rightful mandate and he is still owed a huge sum. Please, let this debt be settled.”

Lamido directed his message to the Minister of Information, who represented President Tinubu at the event. “Tell him [Tinubu] that once this debt is paid, the chapter of June 12 will finally be closed. It’s a moral obligation that must be fulfilled,” he stated.

In his remarks, Lamido also used the occasion to thank dignitaries and supporters who contributed to the book project and graced the launch.

He expressed deep gratitude to God, saying, “All thanks to Allah SWT for His boundless mercy and for allowing us to witness this important day.”

He reserved special appreciation for former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who wrote the foreword to the book and was present at the launch. “Baba, you are my Boss, Guide, Leader, and Inspiration. I sincerely thank you and pray that God continues to bless you with good health and long life,” Lamido said.

He also acknowledged former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, for his statesmanship and unwavering support, describing him as a symbol of national service and honesty.

Lamido commended the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, for his presence and his consistent role in promoting peace and religious harmony.

He extended appreciation to Dr. Iyorchia Ayu for reviewing the book and described him as a comrade and old friend. In addition, he praised the efforts of the Editorial Team, Organizing Committee, and Media Subcommittee for their commitment to the success and visibility of Being True To Myself.
