Former Senate President, Senator David Mark, has expressed profound grief over the death of Pope Francis, describing the late Pontiff as a spiritual icon who championed unity and embodied the virtues of humility and service.
In a statement by his media adviser, Paul Mumeh, Senator Mark praised the Pope’s transformative impact on the Catholic Church, highlighting his efforts in strengthening family values and fostering global unity.
Recalling his leadership of Nigeria’s delegation to the Pope’s inauguration Mass on March 19, 2013, in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City, Senator Mark described the encounter as unforgettable and deeply inspiring.
“Pope Francis was a rare gift to the world — a leader of character and distinction,” Mark said. “His passing is a great loss to humanity but surely a gain to heaven.”
He prayed that the Pope’s legacy of humility, sacrifice, and tireless service would continue to inspire the global Catholic community. Mark also urged Catholics to take solace in the life the Pope lived, calling it one worthy of emulation.
