In a heartwarming gesture of leadership and compassion, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has paid April salaries and pensions ahead of Easter celebrations.
The gesture has brought joy and relief to thousands of workers and retirees across the state.
The early disbursement—several days before month-end aimed to ease financial pressure during the festive period and reflects the administration’s commitment to a people-first approach to governance.
In a statement on Friday, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, said the proactive step was taken to ensure families are well-prepared for Easter.
“Governor Monday Okpebholo is deeply committed to the welfare of Edo workers and pensioners,” Itua said.
“This early payment is a mark of empathy, especially for our Christian faithful preparing to celebrate Easter with their families.”
Civil servants and pensioners have responded with gratitude, praising the governor for what many describe as a rare show of timely leadership in a period of national economic strain.
Mrs. Maria Edobor, a retired teacher from Egor LGA, shared her joy: “This is the first time in years we’re receiving our pension this early. I can now celebrate Easter with my grandchildren without borrowing. God bless the Governor.”
Also speaking, Mr. Osaro Izevbokun, a staff member of the Ministry of Works, described the move as “timely and thoughtful,” saying the early payment had lifted office morale.
“Everyone is smiling. It shows the government truly understands our needs,” he said.
The state government reiterated its commitment to fiscal discipline, transparency, and responsible governance, which it says has made timely salary and pension payments possible despite tough economic conditions nationwide.
Governor Okpebholo’s administration continues to prioritize initiatives that improve citizens’ welfare, reaffirming that under his leadership, people will always come first.
