The Edo State Government has issued a fiery response to what it describes as a “malicious and misleading” statement from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), escalating an already tense political rivalry ahead of crucial elections in the state.
In a strongly worded press release signed by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, the state government accused the PDP of engaging in a “campaign of calumny” aimed at distracting the administration from delivering governance.
The statement follows remarks from PDP Publicity Secretary, Chris Osa Nehikhare, who had criticized the APC-led government in Edo over what the opposition described as constitutional violations and alleged incompetence.
But the Governor’s camp did not hold back, calling PDP’s claims “baseless,” and describing the party as “a drowning opposition struggling to remain relevant.” The government also warned that PDP officials, including Nehikhare, would soon be held accountable for their “spurious allegations.”
“The PDP has turned political discourse into a theatre of lies and bitterness,” the statement read. “They have, in several clandestine meetings, resolved to destabilize Edo State through misinformation and character assassination.”
Political observers say the heated exchange signals a deeper battle for political dominance in Edo State, with the APC and PDP locked in a war of narratives as the 2025 election calendar heats up. The stakes are high: Edo remains one of Nigeria’s most politically vibrant states, and the fierce rivalry reflects broader national tensions between the two major parties.
Despite the rhetoric, Governor Okpebholo, who has enjoyed support in key parts of the state since assuming office, maintains he will stay focused on his administration’s development agenda.
“Edo belongs to all of us,” the statement concluded. “No amount of bitterness or false propaganda will derail the will of the people or slow down the pace of development.”
As the political drama unfolds, citizens and civil society groups are calling for restraint on both sides, urging leaders to prioritize governance and accountability over partisan warfare.
