Nigeria’s creative and autism communities celebrated a historic moment as 15-year-old autistic artist Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke was honored for breaking the Guinness World Record by painting the world’s largest art canvas.
The milestone was marked in a grand ceremony at Eagles Square, Abuja, coinciding with World Autism Awareness Day.
The event, attended by top government officials, international dignitaries, and creative industry leaders, saw the Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, reaffirm the government’s commitment to empowering autistic artists in Nigeria.
In her remarks, Minister Musawa hailed Kanyeyachukwu as a prodigy whose achievement underscored
the limitless potential of individuals with autism.
“We are not only witnessing the breaking of a world record but also the triumph of determination, perseverance, and the unrelenting spirit of the Nigerian youth,” she said.
She emphasized that the Ministry is dedicated to creating platforms for autistic children to showcase their artistic talents. “We will work with relevant stakeholders to provide opportunities for autistic children to develop their creative skills and pursue their passions,” she added.
The special adviser on media and publicity to the minister Dilr. Nneka Ikem Anibeze in a statement on Wednesday indicated that
Kanyeyachukwu’s record-breaking artwork, titled Impossible is a Myth, has become a global symbol of inspiration, proving that individuals with autism can excel when given the right support.
Explaining further the statement said his journey has resonated with many, shattering stereotypes about neurodivergent individuals in the creative space.
The prestigious event was graced by notable personalities, including the UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohammed M. Malik, the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, H.E. Pasquale Salvaggio, and the Director-General of the National Gallery of Art, Ahmed Bashir Sodangi. Also present were the President of the Society of Nigerian Artists, Muhammad Suleiman, representatives of the Chief of Defense Staff, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, officials from the Guinness World Records Organization, and Afrobeat star Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo (D’banj).
