The Global Initiatives for Good Governance (GIGG) and a coalition of NGOs in Kano State strongly condemn the flagrant abuse of power by the Kano State Government, led by Governor Abba Kabir and Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. Their repeated disregard for the rule of law and citizen safety has led to unnecessary deaths, injuries, and public distress.
Despite a security directive issued by the Kano State Police Commissioner banning public activities during Eid celebrations to prevent violence, Governor Abba Kabir and Emir Sanusi defied the order, organizing an unauthorized horse-riding event that resulted in tragic fatalities and multiple injuries.
This recklessness is part of a disturbing pattern. Upon assuming office, Governor Abba Kabir ordered indiscriminate demolitions that killed over 25 innocent citizens. Just recently, another round of demolitions in Rimin Zakara claimed more lives. Shockingly, the Governor remains unapologetic, openly declaring that he has no regrets over these actions.
The Coalition of NGOs under GIGG demands an independent investigation into the deaths and injuries caused by these unlawful actions, prosecution of all government officials responsible for violating security directives and endangering citizens and a public explanation from the Kano State Government on its continued disregard for human lives.
“We commend the security agencies in Kano for their efforts to maintain peace amid these reckless actions. However, justice must be served.
“The people of Kano deserve a government that values human life, respects the rule of law, and prioritizes public safety.
“We urge citizens to demand accountability and ensure that those responsible face the full weight of the law.”
