The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has identified a major deficiency in the petition seeking the recall of the Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District.
In a statement released on Tuesday by INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, the Commission noted that while the petition was submitted with six bags of documents containing signatures, it lacked key contact details required for processing.
INEC observed that the petitioners failed to provide a definite contact address, multiple phone numbers, and email addresses, as mandated by Clause 1(f) of the Regulations and Guidelines for Recall 2024. The only contact information provided was the general location “Okene, Kogi State” and a single telephone number for the lead petitioner, which falls short of the Commission’s requirements.
Due to this omission, INEC is currently unable to formally communicate with the petitioners regarding the next steps.
However, the Commission is making efforts to notify them through alternative means.
INEC reaffirmed that the recall process is a constitutional right of voters but must follow the legal framework.
If the petitioners rectify the identified deficiencies, the Commission will proceed with the verification stage in line with due process.
The public has been advised to disregard any unofficial reports or speculations on social media as INEC remains committed to transparency and fairness in handling the recall process.
