In a dramatic midnight operation, security operatives in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have successfully rescued a kidnapped naval officer, Cynthia Akor, and two civilians who were abducted by armed criminals in Mpape, Abuja.
The joint effort, involving the police, military, and local hunters, also led to the arrest of four suspects and the recovery of ransom money.
The victims were taken on March 21, 2025, after heavily armed assailants attacked the Maman Vatsa Estate gate, blocking Mpape Road and opening fire on moving vehicles. Shortly after the incident, the kidnappers demanded a staggering ₦500 million ransom for the naval officer and ₦200 million each for the civilians.
Following a distress call, the FCT Police Command, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) DCP Isyaku Sharu, mobilized a special rescue team. The operation, which included personnel from the Nigerian military, the Department of State Services (DSS), and members of the local Hunters’ Group, launched an intensive search across Mpape, Gidan Bawa, Anguwan Mu’azu, and Yelwa Hills—spanning the FCT and neighboring Nasarawa State.
Acting on credible intelligence, security forces pinpointed the kidnappers’ hideout in a Fulani resettlement in Anguwan Mu’azu and Yelwa Hills. Between 2:00 AM and 5:30 AM on March 23, 2025, operatives executed a coordinated raid, rescuing the victims unharmed and arresting four suspects. Authorities also recovered ₦3.2 million, suspected to be proceeds from previous kidnappings.
The swift rescue underscores growing concerns over Abuja’s rising kidnapping incidents. Residents have voiced fears over the increasing brazenness of criminal gangs targeting the capital’s outskirts. However, the FCT Police Command has assured citizens of reinforced security in Mpape and surrounding areas.
“The victims are currently receiving medical attention at the Nigerian Army Clinic. We are intensifying efforts to track down the remaining suspects still at large,” said FCT Police spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. Meanwhile, the successful raid has been hailed as a crucial victory against Abuja’s kidnapping menace, signaling a renewed commitment by security forces to reclaim public safety.
