The Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Good Governance (CSGGG) has conferred the Best Performing Senator Award on Senator Eteng Jonah Williams, who represents Cross River Central Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate.
Speaking at the award presentation ceremony in Abuja, the leader of the coalition, Mr. Myke Ngbe, stated that the decision to honor Senator Williams followed a thorough assessment of his contributions to his constituents, particularly in the areas of infrastructure and human development.
“Senator Williams has demonstrated exceptional leadership in the National Assembly, making a significant impact on his people,” Ngbe said. “His legislative achievements have positioned him as a key figure in Nigeria’s political landscape.”
Senator Williams, a seasoned legislator, served three terms in the Cross River State House of Assembly, where he rose to the position of Speaker of the 9th Assembly. He also played key roles in finance, public accounts, health services, and gender development committees.
During his tenure as Speaker, he championed the passage of crucial bills, including, Cross River State House of Assembly Service Commission Bill (2020), Judiciary Funds Management Bill (2021) and Legislature Funds Management Bill (2021)
His legislative prowess earned him the trust of Cross River Central voters, leading to his election as Senator in February 2023 and his swearing-in on June 13, 2023.
Since joining the 10th Senate, Senator Williams has sponsored three bills, including the Nuclear Security and Safety Bill, and has moved five far-reaching motions. His leadership qualities led to his appointment as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream).
Beyond legislative duties, Williams remains committed to humanitarian service, shaped by his personal experiences of hardship and resilience.
Receiving the award, Senator Williams expressed gratitude to CSGGG, describing the recognition as a motivation for him and other politicians to serve with greater dedication.
“I appreciate the civil society organizations for their efforts in tracking and analyzing the performance of elected officials,” he said. “This ensures accountability and helps the electorate make informed decisions.”
The award further cements Senator Williams’ reputation as a statesman and a transformative leader committed to good governance and development in Cross River State and Nigeria at large.
