The South East Zone of Nigeria’s Tax Appeal Tribunal (TAT) has commenced operations in Enugu, ushering in a new era of fairness, transparency, and efficiency in tax dispute resolution.
The Tribunal, inaugurated by the Hon. Minister of Finance, Chief Wale Edun, aims to restore public trust in the tax system by ensuring that taxpayers receive just treatment while upholding government accountability.
At the Tribunal’s inaugural sitting, Chairman Dr. Oracle Nwala, mni, underscored its role as more than just an administrative body but a pillar of justice for businesses and individuals. “Our duty is to ensure that taxation is not weaponized but serves as a tool for economic empowerment and national growth,” he stated.
Delivering the keynote address, Professor Edith Nwosu, former Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, challenged the Tribunal to resist external influences and uphold tax justice. Drawing from Matthew 22:21, she emphasized taxation as a civic and moral obligation that must be administered with integrity, not oppression.
The Tribunal introduced a high-caliber panel of commissioners, including legal and financial experts such as, Dr. Chukwudi Oracle Nwala, a renowned legal practitioner and tax arbitrator, Jude Sunny Egbo, FCA, mni, a leading chartered accountant, Okide Kenneth Ezigbo, a commercial law expert with international experience, Joel Sunsuwa, FCA, a retired government finance director and Anthony A. Eromosele, a seasoned tax consultant.
Stakeholders, including Chief Emmanuel Nnamani, Chairman of the Enugu State Internal Revenue Service, expressed optimism that the Tribunal will curb tax injustices, boost business confidence, and enhance revenue generation without burdening taxpayers.
With rising concerns over tax compliance, economic pressure, and governance accountability, the South East’s TAT signals a turning point in Nigeria’s tax justice system.
As deliberations begin, the Tribunal’s commitment to fair, independent adjudication will be closely watched by businesses, legal practitioners, and taxpayers alike.
