Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
In a resignation letter submitted on Monday, March 10, 2025, to his ward in Kaduna State, El-Rufai cited irreconcilable differences with the APC leadership, expressing disappointment with the party’s direction in recent years.
“I have diligently served the APC and contributed to its growth as a political platform,” he stated. “However, the events of the last two years have demonstrated a troubling disregard for democratic principles and progressive values that I hold dear.”
As a founding member of the APC, El-Rufai played a crucial role in securing the party’s victories in the 2015, 2019, and 2023 elections. Reflecting on his tenure as Kaduna governor, he highlighted achievements in human development, education, healthcare, infrastructure, job creation, and investment.
He explained that his decision to leave the APC stemmed from deep concerns about governance and internal party dynamics.
“At this stage of my political journey, I must seek a new platform to pursue the progressive ideals I believe in,” he said.
Announcing his defection to the SDP, El-Rufai expressed gratitude to his mentors, colleagues, and supporters while reaffirming his commitment to democratic principles.
“As a member of the SDP, I am dedicated to building a strong democratic alternative to challenge the APC in the coming elections,” he stated.
His move comes just days after dismissing speculation about his departure from the APC. Speaking at the National Conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria, held in Abuja on Tuesday, El-Rufai had insisted he had no plans to leave the ruling party.
“I have no intention of leaving the APC,” he said at the time, adding that he expected improved performance from the party.
