The Labour Party (LP) has come down hard on former Anambra governorship candidate Val Ozigbo, accusing him of betrayal and opportunism following his defection from the party.
In a fiery statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the party dismissed Ozigbo’s recent criticisms, branding him a serial defector who jumps ship whenever his personal ambitions are not realized.
“Ozigbo lost the 2021 Anambra governorship election under the PDP, then joined Labour Party—not out of conviction, but to exploit our presidential candidate’s rising popularity. Now, after failing to manipulate his way to the governorship ticket, he turns around to attack the very party that gave him recognition,” the statement read.
Rejected by the Grassroots
LP argued that Ozigbo had little to no impact on the party’s successes, pointing out that he couldn’t even win his polling unit in the 2023 elections. The party alleged that his governorship aspirations were derailed when local party members saw through his lack of loyalty.
“He assumed that his ties to our presidential candidate would hand him the ticket on a silver platter, but grassroots members rejected him outright at the state congress. That defeat is what pushed him to turn against us,” Ifoh stated.
A Desperate Exit?
The party dismissed Ozigbo’s claims that internal crises led to his departure, asserting that he had been politically sidelined since July 2024. It accused him of party-hopping for personal gain rather than genuine service.
“Serious political parties do not exist to serve as personal vehicles for desperate politicians who abandon ship at the first sign of rejection,” the statement read.
While wishing him well, LP warned Ozigbo against undermining the party that once provided him with a platform, emphasizing that politics should be about dedication and service—not entitlement.
