Kogi Court Remands PDP’s Austin Okai for Alleged Cyberstalking, Defamation

The political landscape in Kogi State has taken a dramatic turn as a Lokoja Magistrate Court ordered the remand of prominent political activist and PDP chieftain, Comrade Usman Okai Austin, at the Kabba Correctional Centre over allegations of cyberstalking and criminal defamation.

Okai, known for his outspoken criticism of the Kogi State government, was arraigned on Friday following a petition alleging that he defamed Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo by accusing him of misappropriating billions of naira meant for local government councils and state agencies.

During the hearing, the prosecution, represented by the Department of State Services (DSS), requested Okai’s remand to allow for the conclusion of investigations. The request was granted by Magistrate Mobah Abdullahi of the Chief Magistrate Court 1 at Lugard Court, who ruled that the accused be held in custody for two weeks, pending further proceedings on March 13, 2025.

The DSS justified the remand, stating that it aligns with Nigeria’s Criminal Justice System, which prevents law enforcement from detaining individuals beyond 48 hours without a court order.

The development has sparked reactions across political circles, with supporters of Okai decrying the move as a politically motivated clampdown on opposition voices, while others insist on due process in handling cases of alleged defamation.

As the case unfolds, all eyes are on the court’s next move and the broader implications for political discourse and freedom of expression in Kogi State.
