Emefiele’s Trial: Defense Lawyers Allege Bias, Seek Judge’s Recusal

The trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, took a dramatic turn on Monday as his lawyers accused Justice Abdulrahman Oshodi of bias and demanded his recusal from the case.
Senior Advocates of Nigeria Olalekan Ojo and Kazeem Gbadamosi argued that the judge had already prejudged the matter, compromising Emefiele’s right to a fair trial. Their demand stems from Justice Oshodi’s statement in open court during the examination-in-chief of a prosecution witness, Adetola John, where he allegedly declared that the bribery allegation against Emefiele had been proven.
The defense team objected strongly, asserting that such a statement, made before cross-examination had even begun, indicates that the judge has pre-determined the outcome. “Instead of an accelerated hearing, we are witnessing an accelerated sentencing,” Ojo stated.
Gbadamosi reinforced the argument, insisting that continuing the trial under Justice Oshodi would undermine judicial integrity. He urged the judge to step down in the interest of justice.
In response, Justice Oshodi has scheduled February 26 to deliver a ruling on whether he will recuse himself or continue presiding over the trial. The decision could significantly impact the trajectory of Emefiele’s legal battle.
