The African Development Bank (AfDB) has assured the Kogi State Government of a multi-billion dollar agricultural project to enhance food production and security across the state’s 21 Local Government Areas.
Kogi’s Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Timothy Ojomah, disclosed this during a media briefing in Lokoja, stating that discussions with the AfDB leadership had been highly positive.
Ojomah emphasized that the state government is strategically engaging with AfDB to ensure a seamless partnership for the large-scale project.
“We are engaging with the AfDB President, who has given us strong assurances. This is a multi-billion dollar project that will greatly benefit our farmers. We are optimistic about securing it.”
He highlighted the value chain approach, ensuring that farmers maximize productivity and profitability at every stage of agricultural production.
Ojomah acknowledged that drought between August and September 2024, along with an early end to rainfall in November, had impacted agricultural output.
However, he praised the Ododo administration’s support initiatives, which helped Kogi achieve notable progress in food security despite the climate challenges.
Beyond AfDB’s commitment, Ojomah revealed ongoing discussions with the World Bank on livestock development projects and Chinese firms for large-scale production of cashew, cassava, palm oil, and sesame.
These efforts, he said, would drive significant agricultural expansion in 2025.
He commended Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for his swift interventions in supporting farmers and strengthening Kogi’s agricultural sector.
With AfDB’s backing and diversified investment plans, Kogi is poised to become a leading agricultural hub, ensuring food security, job creation, and economic growth.
