Anthrax Outbreak: VCN Warns of Veterinarian Shortage, Urges Government Action

Published

on

The Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN) has sounded the alarm over a critical shortage of veterinarians, warning that the country lacks the manpower needed to contain the spread of anthrax and other livestock diseases.
The council is calling on the government to immediately recruit more veterinary professionals to prevent future outbreaks and protect public health.

This warning is coming against the backdrop of the recent confirmation by the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development of an anthrax outbreak on a farm in Zamfara State, prompting urgent calls for vigilance and preventive measures.
Speaking in Abuja on Friday at the conclusion of the 2025 VCN staff retreat, VCN Acting Registrar, Oladotun Fadipe, stressed that every local government in Nigeria needs at least two veterinarians to effectively manage animal health crises.
“Many states have only a handful of veterinarians, making it impossible to properly monitor and control livestock diseases. If we continue like this, outbreaks will become a recurring nightmare,” Fadipe warned.
He criticized the underutilization of trained veterinarians, revealing that while many professionals are available, they remain unemployed due to a lack of government action.
“If veterinarians were strategically positioned in the system, they could detect disease outbreaks before they even happen. Right now, we are constantly playing catch-up,” he added.
At the retreat, President of Farm Alert, Dr. Femi Kayode, emphasized the need for modernization in veterinary practice.
He called for the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other digital tools to improve surveillance, diagnosis, and response strategies.
“We must rethink our approach to veterinary medicine. By leveraging technology and strengthening work ethics, we can boost efficiency and productivity, even in challenging times,” Femi noted.
He stressed that livestock health is directly linked to human health, making it imperative to invest in veterinary services as a national priority.
Deputy Registrar of VCN, Dr. Helen Oputa, highlighted the importance of staff motivation and workplace efficiency. She stated that the retreat aimed to equip VCN personnel with the right mindset and tools to tackle the country’s growing animal health challenges.
“We are already seeing results. Our staff are more committed, and we hope this renewed energy will translate into better service delivery nationwide,” she said.
The Veterinary Council of Nigeria is urging the government to act swiftly by, recruiting more veterinarians to cover all 774 local government areas, Investing in veterinary infrastructure to improve disease surveillance and response and incorporating modern technology in veterinary training and practice.
With livestock diseases threatening food security and public health, experts agree that Nigeria can no longer afford to neglect veterinary services.
If urgent steps aren’t taken, the next outbreak could be even worse.

The Obidient Movement has strongly denied allegations made by former Osun State Governor, Bisi Akande, that it orchestrated the EndSARS protests to prevent Bola Ahmed Tinubu from becoming President.

In a statement signed by Dr. Tanko Yunusa, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, the group described Akande’s remarks as false, revisionist, and an insult to the memory of Nigerians who lost their lives during the protests.

The movement emphasized that EndSARS was a nationwide, youth-led protest against police brutality and extrajudicial killings, not a politically motivated agenda.

“EndSARS was not about any individual’s presidential ambition but a call for justice, accountability, and the end of police violence. It is misleading and dishonest to link it to the Obidient Movement, which emerged years later,” the statement read.

The group condemned any attempt to rewrite history, accusing Akande of trying to shift blame for the government’s failures onto the movement.

The Obidient Movement urged Akande and his associates to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges, including, Economic hardship, Insecurity, Unemploymentand Bad governance

“Nigerians are suffering. No amount of misinformation will change the fact that millions are struggling under poor governance. Instead of distorting history, leaders should focus on solutions,” the statement added.

The movement reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for integrity, accountability, and good governance, stressing that false accusations will not deter its mission.

Betrayed by Finland?: Biafra PM Simon Ekpa’s Arrest Sparks Global Outrage

The prolonged detention of Simon Ekpa, Prime Minister of the self-declared United States of Biafra, by Finnish authorities at the behest of the Nigerian government, has ignited fresh international debates on human rights, self-determination, and freedom struggles in Africa.
In a strongly worded statement issued in Abuja, Dr. Ngozi Orabueze, Chief of Staff and Deputy Prime Minister of the United States of Biafra, condemned what she described as Finland’s “calculated betrayal” of its own citizen. Dr. Orabueze accused the Finnish government of colluding with Nigeria to suppress the voice of Biafrans by detaining Simon Ekpa under allegations of terrorism while investigations are ongoing.

“This is not just an assault on one man but a calculated attempt to weaken the struggle for Biafran self-determination and embolden Nigeria’s oppressive policies against Biafrans,” she declared.

Dr. Orabueze pointed to escalating violence in the Biafra region, allegedly orchestrated by the Nigerian state and led by Defence Chief Christopher Musa, who has vowed to dismantle the Biafran movement.
She cited recent killings of Biafran civilians, which she claimed were carried out by reintegrated terrorists acting under the Nigerian government’s orders.
“Simon Ekpa’s only crime is his unwavering defense of Biafran citizens against state-backed terror,” she said.
The statement also called on Biafrans to remain resilient and continue funding their self-defense efforts. Dr. Orabueze urged Finland and Norway to respect international human rights laws and self-determination principles, warning against the criminalization of freedom fighters.

This controversy comes amid growing allegations of Nigeria’s human rights abuses, which have drawn criticism from organizations such as the United Nations and Amnesty International.

Dr. Orabueze reiterated that Biafran independence is not just Simon Ekpa’s vision but a collective aspiration of a marginalized people. She urged the international community to hold Finland and Nigeria accountable, demanding Ekpa’s immediate release to ensure the safety of his life.

“The struggle for Biafran independence is far from over, and history will judge those who choose to suppress rather than support it,” Dr. Orabueze concluded.

The world now watches as this clash of politics, sovereignty, and human rights unfolds.
