Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North, has commended the administration for rejecting economic prescriptions from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, advocating instead for homegrown solutions to Nigeria’s economic challenges.
Speaking at an event hosted by Chief Sunday Ugwu in Arochukwu Local Government Area, Kalu argued that Nigeria’s economic transformation requires locally-driven reforms rather than foreign templates. Highlighting progress under Tinubu’s leadership, the Senator pointed to the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, exchange rate unification, and petrol subsidy removal as key steps toward sustainable growth.
Kalu emphasized that Tinubu’s willingness to take tough, unpopular decisions, such as ending fuel subsidies and liberalizing the foreign exchange market, has already begun to bear fruit.
“The Warri Refinery, which had been dormant for over 20 years, is now operational,” Kalu noted. “We are witnessing a gradual reduction in fuel prices, and as the market stabilizes, prices of other goods and services will follow suit.”
He stressed that such reforms require patience, urging Nigerians to remain optimistic as the long-term effects will outweigh short-term hardships.
Senator Kalu drew comparisons with Asian Tiger economies—South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong—noting that these nations thrived by rejecting IMF and World Bank policies, instead focusing on regional competition and industrial growth.
“We must redefine governance models in Africa,” Kalu said. “Nigeria’s economic problems are rooted in local issues, and solutions must be locally crafted. The Asian Tigers ignored foreign prescriptions, and today they are global economic powerhouses.”

Kalu also underscored the need for regional economic competition to accelerate Nigeria’s development, citing China’s sustained annual growth rate of 10% over the past 35 years as a model for economic resilience.
In addition to economic reforms, the Senator urged youths to take an active role in politics to prevent the election of incompetent leaders.
“If you don’t participate, you allow charlatans into leadership positions. Democracy thrives when people are actively involved, and young Nigerians must rise to this responsibility,” he stated.
Kalu’s host, Chief Sunday Ugwu, praised the Senator for his dedication to grassroots development and his unwavering support for economic reforms that prioritize Nigerian interests.
“The overwhelming welcome you received here shows how much people appreciate your efforts,” Ugwu remarked. “We need more leaders who think about the future and take bold steps to secure it.”
Senator Kalu concluded with a call for unity and commitment, urging both government officials and citizens to play their parts in ensuring Nigeria’s development.
“We cannot grow without hard work. Government policies must be matched with public cooperation, and together we will build an economy that serves all Nigerians,” he said.
With Nigeria’s economic reforms taking shape, Kalu’s remarks underscored the importance of self-reliance and long-term planning, offering hope for a more prosperous and stable future.
